MCA general meeting September 29

September 28th, 2010

The next meeting of the Maplewood Citizens Association will take place 7:30 PM on Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 at the old American College of Cardiology campus at 9111 Old Georgetown Road. The agenda will include a presentation by Thomas Dagley, Montgomery County Inspector General. Also on the agenda are the election of MCA Vice President for 2010-2011, and the expenditure of funds to apply for tax-exempt status.

Because of the current county budget shortfall, the role of the Inspector General has taken on renewed importance in making sure that county revenue is spent appropriately. Although appointed by the County Council, the Inspector General is solely responsible for choosing topics for review after carefully considering available resources and the mission of the office: to reduce fraud and waste, increase accountability, and review efficiency of county programs and agencies.

Please attend what should be a very interesting and timely presentation.

MCA president testifies at planning meeting

September 27th, 2010

On September 16, the National Capital Park and Planning Commission held a hearing on an 8’ wide West Cedar Lane shared-use pedestrian/biker path proposed to be built along West Cedar Lane by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT). State law requires all public utilities to submit their projects for “mandatory referral” review and approval by the Planning Board.

The staff report to the Planning Board recommended that the proposal be approved, but urged consideration of the elimination of the parking lane on the north side of West Cedar Lane as a way of providing more room for the bike path, which would allow it to meet current safety standards. Alternatively, the staff report suggested building a “meandering” path as a way of providing for a somewhat wider bikeway in between the existing utility poles.

Streets scheduled for resurfacing

June 2nd, 2010

Maplewood Street ResurfacingDespite the County’s budget shortfall, many of the streets in Maplewood are scheduled to be resurfaced beginning in the County’s fiscal year 2011 Residential Resurfacing Program.

Roads from West Cedar Lane north to Alta Vista Road are to be done in fiscal year 2011. Alta Vista Road and streets north of it are to be resurfaced in fiscal year 2012 (July 2011-June 2012), subject to budgetary considerations.

Before the resurfacing begins, residents on those streets to be resurfaced will receive a brochure in the mail that explains the road-resurfacing project. In preparation for resurfacing, damaged curbs will be repaired, and areas marked with white paint for full-depth patching. DOT estimates this project will actually start on or about 1 June 2010 and continue approximately three to four weeks, weather permitting. Work hours are between 7 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday. Temporary parking restrictions on streets being paved will be in force, and minor traffic delays should also be expected.

MCA has invited Mr. Randy Paugh, Chief of the Pavement Management Department of the Department of Transportation’s Division of Highway Services to be our guest speaker at the May 19th MCA meeting. We thank Mr. Paugh for offering Maplewood residents this briefing and an opportunity to ask questions regarding this important project in Maplewood.

Update 6/2/10: Signs have gone up on some Maplewood streets announcing that paving will start Friday, 4 June and continue through the next few weeks. If there is a sign on the street in front of your house, please take note of the applicable dates and move your car off the street on those days.
