MCA General Membership Meeting Minutes 11/15/2006
Carol L December 4th, 2006
The following officers of the Maplewood Citizens Association attended the General Membership Meeting, held November 15, 2006 at the Heart House:
Allen Myers, President
Seth Maiman, Vice President
Bill Davis, Treasurer
Carol Linden, Secretary
Fourteen members of the community attended.
- There was no secretary’s report from the last meeting because there was no secretary at that time.
- Bill Davis, Treasurer, provided his report. The Association has $2800 income this year, has expended $1800, and has a current balance of $6314.74. The membership year ends in May and begins in September. Membership numbers are down relative to previous years, which most likely reflects a lack of current “burning issues”. In addition, last year there were 2 social events, which probably contributed to increasing membership. Bill Davis will head up a membership committee and start calling people to encourage membership in January. A spring social event is also planned.
- Mike Krumlaus, Director of Solid Waste Services, Montgomery County Recycling, gave a very informative and interesting presentation on the Solid Waste Management Program. Specifics of the program can be found on the website at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/solidwaste or www.mcrecycles.org, or by calling customer service at 240-777-6410.
- Jeff Yokum, facilities manager for FASEB, provided an update on the special exception held by the organization. The original plan called for tearing down and rebuilding the Lee Building. The organization has decided to postpone carrying out this plan, but needs to renew the special exception and requested the concurrence of the MCA. There was a motion, which was seconded, and carried unanimously, to provide MCA concurrence with renewal of the FASEB special exception.
- MCA president Allen Myers provided an update on the American College of Cardiology and the Heart House. The College moved in September, but has not yet sold the building. As things stand, the MCA can use the facility until further notice. However, the MCA needs to be prepared to use a new location for its meetings. There was brief discussion of options. All except the Bethesda Country Day School would charge for use of a meeting room. There was a motion, which was seconded and carried unanimously, that the MCA should plan to meet at the BCDS if the Heart House is no longer available.
- MCA president Allen Myers raised the issue of continuation of the MCA telephone line, which in actuality is a voice mailbox. It costs the Association $27.00/month. There was a motion to eliminate the phone line, which receives 1 or 2 calls a month, and to rely instead on email or written communication. The motion was seconded, but defeated in the vote.
- Ralph Schofer, NIH Liaison, stated that the Transportation Committee has not met. However, speeding on Beech Dr. has become an issue. He will ask the Department of Transportation to place mobile speed monitoring units on the straightaway portions of the road to help deter speeding.
- Linda asked those present who has MCA signs. Once she determines who has the signs, which are used to announce meetings and events, she will call with reminders to put out the signs before meetings.
