Lise Van Susteren, MD, will speak about global warming at the next Maplewood Citizens Association general membership meeting on January 30th. Van Susteren was trained by Al Gore in Nashville, Tennessee to present the slide show which became the basis of his Oscar-winning documentary film An Inconvenient Truth. Gore has since trained over 1,000 activists throughout the United States to take this slide show on the road to promote grass-roots support for the issue.
Van Susteren has taken her version — tailored to her particular audience — to political, church, educational, environmental and civics groups across the DC Metropolitan area and beyond. To date she has given over 70 such presentations in America, the Caribbean and Europe. Last spring she was named Eastern Regional Director of The Climate Project.
She brings a personal passion to her presentation of dramatic slides, startling graphs and persuasive arguments to demonstrate the urgency of the planet’s climate crisis. She is eager to learn the concerns of her audiences, to take questions, give practical energy saving tips and strategize ways to take political action.
Van Susteren is a practicing forensic psychiatrist who obtained her medical doctorate in 1982 at the University of Paris and interned in Paris and Togo. She worked as a resident in psychiatry at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. Board certified in general and forensic psychiatry, she has worked as staff psychiatrist at the Alexandria Mental Health Center in Alexandria and at the Springfield Mental Health Center. Van Susteren has also been a consultant to the Central Intelligence Agency, conducting psychological assessments of world leaders.
Van Susteren hosted The Doctor Is In on AM radio station WTNT in Silver Spring. In 1984, she co-founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to the humane treatment of the mentally ill and the historic preservation of St. Elizabeths Hospital.
In 2006, Van Susteren sought the Maryland Democratic nomination to the U.S. Senate but withdrew due to lack of funds. She is the sister of Fox News legal analyst Greta Van Susteren.
