As reported yesterday in the Bethesda Gazette, The McClean School of Maryland, a private K-12 institution currently located in Potomac, is proposing to relocate its upper school to the old Heart House property at 9111 Old Georgetown Road. The 10-acre site was vacated by the American College of Cardiology in September 2006 and has been unoccupied since then. Eventually, the Bethesda campus would house approximately 350 students in grades 9-12. The McLean School’s younger students (grades K-8) would stay in Potomac.
School officials have stated that although the existing building would require only a minimum of renovation to accommodate the influx of students and faculty, there will be a need for a new athletic field as well as a gymnasium on the property. They will present their proposal to the neighborhood at an upcoming meeting on the Heart House campus.
The McLean School is fully accredited and holds membership in a number of local and national organizations, including the Learning Disabilities Association and the Parents of Gifted and Talented/Learning Disabled Children. According to their web site, the school was established in 1954 to “provide a unique environment for learning that would serve the needs and gifts of all kinds of students”. An announcement on the site details the background of the planned move, and predicts a move-in date of late 2010 to early 2011.

The Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES) has notified the MCA that it would like to construct 31 townhomes to house students who are obtaining advanced education degrees through the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The townhomes would be constructed on property owned by FAES bordered by West Cedar Lane, Cypress Avenue, and Acacia Avenue.
There are many zoning, environmental, design and habitability issues associated with the FAES proposal. MCA would like to invite interested Maplewood residents to join a committee that will address these issues and moderate MCA’s response to them. To join the committee, please contact MCA president Allen Myers or leave a message on the MCA hotline at 301-530-6080, or by signing up at the September 24th meeting.

Lise Van Susteren, MD, will speak about global warming at the next Maplewood Citizens Association general membership meeting on January 30th. Van Susteren was trained by Al Gore in Nashville, Tennessee to present the slide show which became the basis of his Oscar-winning documentary film An Inconvenient Truth. Gore has since trained over 1,000 activists throughout the United States to take this slide show on the road to promote grass-roots support for the issue.

A new parking plan starts tomorrow, January 2nd at the Bethesda Library:
Under the plan, library patrons using the parking lot will park in numbered spaces, then enter the space number at a kiosk inside the library. This will allow them to park free for two hours. Customers using the library for longer than two hours need only to re-enter the number of their space. There is no time limit on the number of hours library customers may park, as long as the space number is validated every two hours.
After the County Council voted to make parking free at all county libraries, the meters at the Bethesda Library were removed. This led to an influx of non-library users which resulted in a full lot most of the day. Hopefully the new plan will eliminate the freeloaders.

As the Post reported recently in a page one story, The Navy’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) BRAC has been released and is available for public viewing on the Navy’s NNMC BRAC web site.
The planned expansion of the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda will add an estimated 2,200 workers and double the number of patients and visitors at the center’s campus each year, increasing traffic in a congested area of Montgomery County, according to a draft report released by the Navy…
What it does not spell out is who will pay for road improvements that county officials estimate could cost $70 million.

Because of the recent snow, DPWT says it will be using dump trucks to haul the leaves away:
This week’s snow storm has created wet leaf piles that are more difficult and slower to collect using vacuum trucks. DPWT will target locations that historically have had a large volume of leaves. Areas that have received one vacuum leaf collection will still receive a second round even if their leaves are collected using the dump trucks.

The Coalition of Military Medical Center Neighbors (CMMCN) was recently formed to represent the views of the 3000-plus residents of the area surrounding the future Walter Reed Military Medical Center, which includes the Maplewood neighborhood. The group intends to advocate a reduction of vehicles on adjoining roadways, encouraging and improving pedestrian access to the base, and “actively engaging the public about the critical role they can play in providing input to the process,” among other things.
For more information on the CMMCN’s objectives and how to get involved, see the CMMCN Yahoo Groups page, or contact Ilaya Hopkins.

Montgomery Councilmember Roger Berliner is sponsoring a public forum on Woodmont East II, a proposed mixed-use development on the corner of Bethesda and Woodmont Avenues. The developers will present their revised plans. Members of the public will be invited to ask questions and express their views. The meeting will be held on Tuesday January 8th, 2008 between 7 and 9 PM at the BCC Regional Services Center, 4805 Edgemoor Lane.
Woodmont East is a proposed 539,825 square foot mixed-use development project (hotel, retail, and housing) located at the corner of Woodmont and Bethesda Avenues, extending to Elm Street. After concerns were expressed by community members, the Montgomery County Planning Board, and Councilmember Berliner, the project developers asked the Planning Board to defer action on the proposal until they had an opportunity to revise the plan. The presentation will reflect the project sponsor’s response to the concerns raised by the community.
