Navy to hold more BRAC public hearings

December 15th, 2007

The Navy has has announced that it will hold two public hearings on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) related to the BRAC-directed creation of the new Walter Reed Military Medical Center. These hearings, where members of the public can present verbal and written comments to Navy representatives, will be held at the Pooks Hill Marriott (adjoining the Maplewood neighborhood) on January 9 and 10 from 6 PM to 8 PM both evenings.

Here’s a brief overview:

  • Program starts at 6 with a brief introduction and overview of the agenda.
  • Capt Malanoski will then give about a 20-30 minute overview of the DEIS and then turn the program over to the person who will manage the hearing.
  • Each person wishing to speak will be asked to sign up when they enter
the room and when called upon will have 3 minutes to make an oral statement.
  • Individuals can also submit written statements – there will be tables and forms (if needed) for that. It will be a true hearing format with the Navy listening and recording statements, concerns, questions, etc.
  • There will not be a question and answer session.
  • It should end by 9 PM.

The Navy requests that people asking to speak at either public meeting prepare their statements to meet a 3-minute limitation on the length of that part of the statement to be presented verbally. This is to ensure that all persons desiring to make a comment at the meeting are given that opportunity, not to constrain any individual’s ability to fully provide their comment.

For more information, see the full announcement on the CMMCN Yahoo Groups site. You can also call the Navy to get more information about the public hearings at (301) 295-2722 weekdays between 9 AM and 5 PM.
